It winds through hilly landscapes, isolated farms, and ancient places of worship, following part of the official Via Francigena trail before turning onto a scenic white road. A peaceful itinerary, ideal for walkers and pilgrims seeking silence and authenticity.
Ponte a Rigo (SI)
The walk begins in Ponte a Rigo, with its small church dedicated to pilgrims. A path branches off to the right, parallel to the Cassia, through open countryside, cultivated fields and scattered houses.
After the first stretch, the Cassia is crossed with caution.

Once the main road is crossed, a secondary stretch of the old Cassia leads toward Centeno, where the historical Papal Customs House once stood, marking the border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States. The place, now quiet and secluded, still evokes the feeling of a frontier and a passage between worlds.
The route continues to the junction with the SP Procenese.
