The walk begins at the central square of Proceno, in the heart of the fortified village. The route descends along the SP Procenese, passing through one of the best-preserved towns in the area. Soon after, you will encounter the Romanesque Church of San Martino, a simple and evocative site immersed in greenery. A little further on, turn right and follow signs for Castagnetelle, with the swimming pool and picnic area.
Woodland path and Church of Peace
Related: Church of Santa Maria della Pace
The signage leads along a historic trail that crosses a quiet, shaded woodland area, once frequented by both pilgrims and local residents. Descending along the path, you reach the ruins of the Church of Peace, now reduced to vegetation-covered remains but still rich in spirituality and ancient charm.
The trail continues downhill, following the course of a small stream.
Stridolone Stream and Provincial Road SP Procenese
Related: Stridolone stream
The path now runs alongside the Stridolone stream, which flows through a narrow, lush valley. The walk approaches the SP Procenese road once more, which must be crossed with caution: the section is exposed and can be busy, so caution is advised.
Once across the road and stream, you begin the final uphill segment.
Acquapendente
The final stretch is uphill, with variable gradients. The route follows a dirt path and then secondary paved roads, crossing farmlands and countryside leading to the entrance to Acquapendente, the northern gateway to the Tuscia region. The arrival is marked by an increasingly clear view of the town and the profile of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, an iconic landmark of the Francigena pilgrimage.
