PROCENO

A REVITALIZED VILLAGE

Proceno: Etruscans, Popes, and Galileo

A village in Lazio region where time has left its traces

Proceno is a small medieval village in northern Lazio region, just before the border with Tuscany. It sits on a hill and can be reached from the Via Cassia along a scenic road. It is known as the gateway to the Tuscia area.

The village still keeps the shape of the old walled town, once protected by strong Etruscan walls and three entrance gates. In the center stands the Rocca of Proceno, a medieval castle next to the Renaissance-style Palazzo G.A. Sforza. Around it, seven small churches tell the story of many centuries. The narrow stone streets and old rooftops make you feel like time has stopped.

Proceno is crossed by the Via Francigena, an important European pilgrimage route and cultural trail. Travelers arriving in the village can choose between two variants: a Valley route, easier and more accessible, or a Mountain route, more challenging but exceptionally scenic and evocative.

From the highest point of the village, you can enjoy amazing views: Mount Amiata, the Paglia Valley, and the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve. All around, you’ll find peace, silence, and wide open landscapes. Below, the Via Francigena walking route follows the river, and just ahead is the old Papal Customs House of Centeno, which reminds us that Galileo Galilei once passed here.

Proceno has a long history, more than 2,500 years. Pope Pio II called it “a noble and strong tvillage.” You can still feel that strength today: in the walls, the streets, and the quiet.

Proceno is part of the Borghi Autentici d’Italia (Authentic Villages of Italy). Visiting it means taking time to enjoy simple things: nature, peace, and local history. It’s a great place to start your trip through Alta Tuscia and the paths of the Via Francigena.
