From Ponte a Rigo to Proceno along the historic Via Cassia, through open fields and traces of ancient borders
Unlike the Monte Variant, the Valley Route follows the historic axis of the Via Cassia, in a more direct itinerary, with some paved sections. It is the ideal choice for those wishing to retrace the main road traveled for centuries by pilgrims, soldiers, and merchants, crossing open rural landscapes and touching symbolic places such as the Papal Customs House of Centeno, on the border between Tuscany and Lazio.
Ponte a Rigo (SI)
The journey begins in the tiny Tuscan village of Ponte a Rigo, in the municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni. The small Church of San Pellegrino ideally marks the starting point, evoking memories of medieval pilgrimages to Rome.
The route winds through rural landscapes, historic farms, and ancient villages, offering an authentic immersion in the beauty of Alta Tuscia and Val di Paglia.
From here, the path follows a trail parallel to the Via Cassia, heading southeast.
SP20 and Podere Sant’Ofelia
Following Provincial Road 20 toward Monte Amiata – Villa Sforzesca, the trail crosses a wide agricultural area. From afar, one can spot the Sforza Villa, a 17th-century building commissioned by the Sforza family for land reclamation projects.
At Podere Sant’Ofelia, a marked point along the Via Francigena, the paved road ends and gives way to a white gravel path winding through fields and woods, gradually leading to the Lazio border.
