This short but evocative loop trail unfolds near the village of Proceno, in the valley crossed by the Stridolone stream.

Picnic Area and Path along the Stridolone

The route starts at the Castagnetelle Picnic Area, a well-equipped green area with tables, a drinking fountain and services. From here, the trail crosses a footbridge over the Stridolone stream (accessible during low water conditions), entering a cool and shaded section. It runs along the stream for about 1.5 km up to the Serpent Spring, a fountain fed by a natural spring. An ideal place to stop, listen to the sound of the water and enjoy the forest’s tranquillity.
Along the Francigena to the Church of Peace

Past the fountain, cross a bridge and turn left. Here begins the uphill stretch along the Via Francigena, walked in reverse. Halfway up, you reach the ruins of the Church of Peace, surrounded by silence and vegetation. A place full of history and spirituality, perfect for a reflective stop.
Return to Castagnetelle
The final section climbs gently for about 500 meters, reconnecting with the starting point. A short loop route, rich in nature, scenic viewpoints and places of memory.
