The Gate of Lazio is located along the Via Francigena, on one of the most scenic stretches between Lazio and Tuscany. In this ancient landscape where nature, history, and spirituality intertwine, the gate serves as both a symbolic and physical threshold, welcoming travelers as they enter Lazio on a millennia-old route. For over 1,500 years, the Via Francigena has been crossed by pilgrims, crusaders, merchants, and wanderers. Today, it is walked by those in search of authentic contact with nature, themselves, and the history of the land. In 2006, a group of former papal guards placed a commemorative marker to celebrate the 500th anniversary of their founding—passing precisely through Proceno. The village has officially been recognized as “Proceno – Gate of Lazio”, underlining its symbolic role as the entry point into the region.
A new entrance between hospitality and landscape
In 2022, the symbolic idea became real: a monumental wooden structure was inaugurated, called Porta del Lazio , visible from afar and positioned so as to frame the profile of the village . Next to it, an area equipped with benches and a water source welcomes those who arrive.
The chosen location is highly scenic: from here you can observe the landscape that opens towards the south, with the possibility of spotting buzzards, hawks and kestrels , whose flight, especially the "suspended" one of the kestrel, known as the "Holy Spirit", adds a natural and suggestive element to the traveler's experience.
Today the Porta del Lazio is one of the symbolic places of the journey in northern Tuscia , an invitation to slowly and respectfully cross a territory of great beauty and authenticity.
