Born as a symbol of reconciliation after centuries of clashes between Proceno and Acquapendente, the Church of the Madonna della Pace is a small jewel of history and spirituality. Built in the 12th century, it has preserved over the centuries the memory of a wounded community but eager for a new beginning. Today, even if in ruins, it continues to tell a past made of faith, conflict and hope.
The Church of the Madonna SS. della Pace was built in the 12th century to commemorate the peace between the communities of Proceno and Acquapendente , after a long period of conflict. Its origin is linked to a dramatic event in 1149, when a fierce battle was fought at the Porta di San Martino, as recorded in the municipal statutes of 1734 and local chronicles. To avoid further clashes, a chapel was erected in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary , chosen as the guarantor of reconciliation.
From the original chapel to the the 16th-century complex
Initially limited to the presbytery only, the church was expanded in 1533 with the addition of a cross-vaulted nave and a central arch in carved stone. Construction continued until 1588 and was completed in 1594.
The building had a simple structure with a gable roof, facade in river stone, a three-arch portico, and a small bell gable. The altar was built directly on the rock where peace was signed between the two communities, making the site both sacred and symbolic.
Artistic and devotional elements
Inside, the church housed significant artistic testimonies:
-
On the vault of the presbytery, the four Evangelists were painted.
-
On the side walls, one could admire the Doctors of the Church and other Saints.
-
In the back wall was a niche containing an ancient effigy of the Virgin Mary, flanked by Saint Catherine and Saint Mary Magdalene.
Although today the church is in a state of ruin, it retains a strong symbolic and identity value for the community of Proceno.
